Final Reflection

I learned how to interact and explain my artwork to people. I would say that they need to have a solid concentration idea formed by the time second semester starts. I think they should also make sure to take all of their pictures early so they have time to edit and don't have to rush to finish their concentration. Positive aspects of the class were learning how to edit, interesting assignments, and learning how to put my thoughts into my artwork. I learned that I like taking pictures of nature and of people. I also learned that my photos convey more than a one word idea. I will apply it to taking pictures for other classes and for my family in the future. I will use what I have been taught about lighting and other photography elements to make my pictures better.

Concentration Written Commentary

I explored the idea of man vs. nature. I started out just showing how man emulated nature, but I then moved on to more abstract concepts such as how man manipulates and expresses nature. At first, I used plain pictures to create diptychs, but as my series progressed I began to edit the pictures in a way that emphasized what I was trying communicate. In the 8th image, instead of showing how man emulates nature, I showed how man manipulates it. Image 1 shows the human form, which is natural, adorned and changed through makeup and the sign for love.  I began my process by taking pictures of common items and then I began to edit them. I created diptychs in Photoshop and I made my images have greater contrast. I used movement, repetition, emphasis, warm contrast, and direction of light. I used movement to create a rhythm which is evident in pictures 2 and 6. Repetition was used in images 8 and 11. Emphasis was used in all my pictures to highlight my core ideas. Warm contrast was strongly used in pictures 1 and 5. Direction of light was used to help emphasize pictures as shown in images 1 and 8. My final images show the summation of my ideas. I began with images of comparison in images 2 and 9, but moved on to images that showed expression in images 1 and 5.  They show how man emulates nature as well as manipulates and expresses it.

Week 6....

I can't decide which one is best.

Week 6: Final Concentration

These are 10 of my final 12 images. I took most of my time editing and used many diptychs to emphasize the difference between man and nature. Many of my pieces, such as the second to the last one, show on abstract version of man vs nature. The top picture in the diptych shows an old, rusted lamp that had been worn by the sea and the bottom picture shows a modern sconce. The sconce is also wrapped in metal leaves showing another connection between man and nature.

Week 5

I tried to work on taking the same image and distorting it. I used repetition to show differences and I tried to use color to show man's affect on nature.

Week 4

This week I've been focasing on editing. I've learned how to change eye color and other selected areas. This is helpful because I'll be using the color of the eyes to convey a message about the picture such as someones wild nature or anger.

Week 3

This week I focused on layering and changing the color of my pictures. The top pictures loosly interpet man vs. nature by showing a savage side of man vs. an ethereal or lighter side. The triptych I created also is a way of showing man vs. nature in an abstract sense. The middle picture of the triptych is an unaltered image whereas the other pictures have been altered by man. I'm thinking about changing my concentration to a more abstract man vs. nature series.

Week 2

This week I worked on layering and pairing pictures. Three of these images are the same but with different saturations and distortions. I also tried layering man and nature together then creating a diptych of the same picture with different levels of contrast.

Week 1

In my concentration I want to show the similarities between man and nature. Each set of two pictures are similar to each other, one being man made and the other from nature.
